Hermes Psychopompos* Vase, or The Forgetting Vase; Terra Sigillata on red earthenware; total height 64,5 cm; Ø 17,5 cm; 2019
The shape and colours of this vase mimic a white-ground oil container called a Lekythos, dedicated to funeral rites in ancient Greece.
As a Terra Sigillata experiment, the thick layers of painted white are shedding together with the black line drawings.
As the images fade, the object returns to its basic red/ orange colour.
* Psychopompos (Gr.); guide of souls. One of the roles of the god Hermes is to escort newly deceased souls to their afterlife.
