La Signora di Paestum
Terracotta pomegranates, Camembert and bacon. The tongue-in-cheek installation 'La Signora di Paestum' at the National Museum of Antiquities shows a fictional deity surrounded by ceramic sacrificial food.
This work, which hails from the Anima series, is a contemporary interpretation of the ceramic food that would have been sacrificed in the various temples throughout ancient Paestum. 'La Signora di Paestum' playfully combines ancient Greek offerings with the 18th-century tradition of trompe l'oeil ceramics: extravagant imitation food that would be theatrically presented on lavishly laid dinner tables to spark conversation .
